whining noise
« on: Jan 19, 2014, 07:35 PM »
When I start my ss up i get this whining noise then when I rev it  it gets louder could it be my serpentine belt or the bearing  could it be my steering pump without turing the wheel or maybe  altenator

Start with the obvious. Remove the belt and check the pulleys. Should be quiet and smooth. Also check the belt tensioner. Good luck.

If the belt tensioner pulley has a lil play can that chew the ends of the belt

Not likely. Have you changed the belt recently?  If the ends of the belt are getting chewed up, it almost sounds like an alignment issue. Have you changed any of the accessories (alternator, etc) recently?

Start with changing the belt as you have no idea how many miles are on it and go from there.

While the belt is off, and all is clear and safe... start the car and listen. Is the noise gone? (DO NOT LET IT RUN FOR LONG) There should be no play in any pulley and they should rotate freely, no roughness felt while turning by hand.

Did you find the cuplrit?  Mine is doing the same thing and it sounds like it's coming from the alternator pulley.

i have had the same problem and the problem is my steering pump, replaced it and it went away then winter came and its my only vehicle. The first really cold day like 5 degrees outside, started it up and here we go again the noise was back but then it goes away after it warms up but it takes a long time to go away. my next step is to ask GM if they have herd of this issue or if anyone else has any suggestions.

They may have used the wrong type of power steering fluid or one that is too thick in colder temps. Even with the proper fluid and lots of miles on it, it gets thick like jello in the cold maybe just a flush and refill is due.

I replaced my alternator and belt and all has been good in the world. I did notice the bolt on the tensioner was backed almost completely out.   Not sure how that happened, unless the dealer removed it when they worked in the tranny.

my car started to develop a whine too similar last 3 months as well.  Also my A/C does not work anymore, just blinks 6 times when pressed.
Would the belt/pulley cause the A/C from not working?

I have 06 impala ss. Has whined since i bought it. Replaced water pump cause it failed then alternator power steering pump and all idler pulley with new fayco belt. Still whines. Almost like its in the engine. Its run ok for a couple years whining though. And i know what you mean about problems. Nonstop fixing something. Never the same thing just one part after the next.
